The future of AI may be female, but it isn't feminist
Housed in a tall plastic cylinder, Amazon's Alexa is far from physically resembling a woman. Yet when asked about its gender, the system curiously responds it is "female in character." A closer look at recent developments in artificial intelligence shows Alexa is the rule rather than the exception. From Apple's Siri to Hanson Robotics' humanoid robot Sophia, it seems that the future is female indeed -- but not in the way we intended. Artificial intelligence and robotics may intend to free us from many human limitations, but it seems that gender stereotypes are not one of them.

During the American presidential election we saw Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton both work hard on getting votes within the'rust belt' area of America. Steel mill towns and coal districts with jobs that went somewhere else or just went altogether. What wasn't a significant talking point, and was missed by many commentators, was those jobs that are gone forever. Humans are being replaced by robotics and that will only increase in the next number of decades.

But there are also no physical laws we know of that would prevent us reproducing or exceeding its capabilities. Popular AI from Issac Asimov to Steven Spielberg is plausible. What the question doesn't address is: when will it be plausible?
